Kacey Simon is the queen bee of Marquette Middle School tells people exactly what she thinks. She also gives this type of advice in her segment of her school’s newscast called “Simon Says”. She has three best friends, Molly, Liv, and Nessa and is currently the lead in the school’s play of Guys and Dolls.

She’s super excited because her crush, Quinn Wilder, is the leading male. Kacey thinks nothing can stop…until she gets an eye infection and is forced to wear glasses. Also after a freak roller skating fall, she finds herself wearing braces herself. Her so-called friends ditch her and she doesn’t get to be in the play anymore because of her lisp.

She’s lost it all and is near the bottom of the social ladder. She has a plan to take back her reputation and her friends back. With the help of her ex-best friend from the past and the lead in a boy she dubs ‘Skinny Jeans’, she’s back on her way to the top? Once she’s there, will she stay there?

I haven’t read a lot of middle grade literature, but I definitely have enjoyed the ones that I have and this is no exception. Kacey thinks that she is being nice by telling everybody what she thinks and does not realize that she hurts them. I loved how she grew in the novel. I really enjoyed and laughed at some of the band scenes, especially one in particular. There’s supposed to be a sequel out next year, so I hope she doesn’t fall back into old habits. I definitely suspect a certain relationship to grow.
