Anna’s Dad has been working for the Branch and has four genetically altered guys in their basement because of it.  Sam, Trev, Cas, and Nick have different personalities and all seem to like her except for Nick.  Ever since Anna was younger, she started to sneak and talk to Sam.  Over the years, she developed feelings for Sam and a friendship with Trev.  She lives to sneak down and play chess with Sam.  For the past eight months, Anna has been allowed to help her Dad monitor the boys.

One day when Connor and Riley, people from the Branch, come to visit, Sam helps the other guys escape and bring Anna along at her Dad’s request.  Now, Anna’s on the run with Sam, but she feels betrayed.  Sam is able to escape at the expense of Anna’s trust.  The Sam she thought she knew doesn’t seem the same.  Will Anna be able to keep away from people at the Branch and find out if the Sam she thought she knew was all a big lie?

I typically don’t like books like this, but I really liked this one.  I was so mad at Sam at how he was after all of them first escaped.  I was really invested in Anna’s feelings for Sam.  I can see why Sam believed in what he said at the time, but it’s hard not to get mad at him considering that Anna cares about him.  I do feel like he redeems himself in the end, but I still feel like I don’t know enough about the guys.  However, it’s mentioned that the guys’ memories were swiped, so hopefully that will be delved into a lot more in the next book.

I loved the bickering between Cas and Trev and one part in the book.  It really cracked me up, and I loved that Cas was constantly complaining about wanting to eat.  He added a lot of comedic relief that made me like this book.  It definitely was a breath of fresh air in the action and suspense that went on throughout the book.

Even though I really like this, I’m hesitant to read the first book since this series is so out of my comfort zone in reading.  I wish this would just have been a standalone, but then again, I’ll get to see Cas again.  Anna can have Sam all she wants.  I want Cas. LOL!

  1. Hey, great review! :) Altered has been in my TBR pile for awhile, but I've been pushing it down all this time. This reminds me a lot of The Elemental series by Brigid Kemmerer and the Denazen series by Jus Accardo. I really liked Denazen, but the whole group of guys with powers and a girl running away thing didn't really grow on me, so... Still not sure about this one!

I love characters like Cas though! Haha I love comedy in the midst of some heart pounding action. And Sam sounds like a jerk! Oh man! Haha, glad you have Cas to yourself then. ;)
